Compline (Night Prayer) - Saturday, 29 April 2023

The image tonight depicts Catherine of Siena, a woman who served as a Dominican tertiary at the age of eighteen and lived a life of contemplative prayer and mystical experience. She devoted herself to active care for the poor and sick and, suffering a stroke, died on this day in the year 1380.

Compline (Night Prayer) - Friday, 28 April 2023

Today the Church gives thanks for the life, ministry and witness of Peter Chanel. Born in France in 1803 and martyred in Fiji this day in 1841 after then chief's son asked for baptism; an act which saw his father send a group of warriors to murder Peter.

Within a year of Peter's death the whole island was Christian and Peter became revered throughout the Pacific Islands and Australasia as its protomartyr.

Today the Church celebrates the life and work of Christina Rossetti. 

A woman whose poems and works have inspired and blessed so many. 

The carol 'In the bleak midwinter' and carols such as 'Not I, But He' which I include here: 

 Lord Jesus, who would think that I am Thine? 

Ah! who would think, who sees me ready to turn back or sink, that Thou art mine? 

 I cannot hold Thee fast tho' Thou art mine: 

Hold Thou me fast, so earth shall know at last and heaven at last that I am Thine.

As the day closes we reflect, intercede and seek that forgiveness for others that we seek for ourselves.

As we lay all the day has held before the Lord, we pray: "Lord, hear our prayer."

Saints encourage us in our faith by the way they lived and by the way they died. George is no different - he is for us an example of what the cost of witnessing to the love of God might be.

God of hosts, 

who so kindled the flame of love in the heart of your servant George 

that he bore witness to the risen Lord by his life and by his death: 

give us the same faith and power of love that we who rejoice in his triumphs 

may come to share with him the fullness of the resurrection; 

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, 

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
