Today the Church gives thanks for the life, ministry and witness of Peter Chanel. Born in France in 1803 and martyred in Fiji this day in 1841 after then chief's son asked for baptism; an act which saw his father send a group of warriors to murder Peter.
Within a year of Peter's death the whole island was Christian and Peter became revered throughout the Pacific Islands and Australasia as its protomartyr.
