They're not the people of God, they're . . .

Merely a nation who happen to be called Israel!

I despair at my friends and colleagues who adopt the Zionist stance and see in The nation state of Israel the people of God and a Biblical call to blind support of that body. Indeed the spiritual reality of Israel is, but the nation state of Israel isn't. It is a generally secular nation and is Jewish in the same way the England is 'Christian'.

Further evidence of this can be seen in the Jewish blockading of The Gaza strip, something that comes into focus through the boarding of boats bringing supplies and relief. The boarding and ensuing firefight saw fifteen (presumed Turkish) 'human rights'activists killed.

We continue to see a lack of proportionality in terms of the israeli response to Gaza. The nation continues to act exactly as God told His people not to act. I'm all for Israel, that spiritual body, but am concerned that we (Christians) stand by and support what is effectively the 'collective punishment' (which is illegal under all of the Geneva conventions) of the people of Gaza and remain largely silent over the financial and poitical support of Israel by the US (and others).

As a postscript, the 750,000 children living in rubble are not the combatants - this is a disgrace and denies that which the God of the Jews calls His people to be. Why, because Israelis a secular nation state rather than a spiritual reality.

Mercy - justice - humility. (Micah 6: 6-8)

Where is it?

Vic,

While there was sympathy for Israel particularly after the 6 day war, they have consistently lost Public Opinion by their heavy handed and imperialistic behaviour since then.

I regret to say that Israel seems to me to be implementing self survival as oppression of others than in the interests of all of the people of Palestine.

There is evidence that the US administration is becoming a little tired of Israel obstruction of a lasting peace, but can the President ignore the large Jewish vote and Pro-Israel lobby present in Washington.

Off course, Israel is also a key, strategic US Ally in the middle east and there is a lot to lose if it goes under as a state.

I will be interested to see the stance our Government adopts to the action taken yesterday by Israel's Commando's against the flotilla of boats going to the relief of Gaza.

Heavy handed and pre-emptive - and typical of the over reaction of Israel to all that it perceives as a threat to its security.

This is just the latest area of suffering to hit the media. Families in Pakistan, Haiti, Guatemala in every 3rd world country are suffering.
Praying generally seems so inadequate although I know God hears, my heart aches for parents trying feed and clothe their children. For those recovering from injuries and loss.
As the madia move to latest crisis the others seem soon forgotten.

Hi Vic
Yes I find the unwavering support for Israel the nation state among some sections of the Church extremely disturbing so I think I agree with you. But what is your understanding of the spiritual body of Israel?

In many ways, Vic, this pro-Israel attitude, that you complain of, is a reaction to the knee-jerk extreme anti-Israel stance taken by the mainstream media (MSM), the government, and many middle class "liberal" people everywhere. Yes, there may be some unthinking Zionism in the Church, but there's one heck of a lot of anti-Israelism/antiSemitism everywhere else. Supporters of Israel argue, eg, that it's another MSM myth that this ship was full of aid workers (it may have been, but maybe not; personally I wouldn’t believe anything that such as the BBC said about Israel). Most depressing is the unholy alliance, often seen, between parts of the political Left, in the West, and militant Islamism (which puts destruction of Israel above the real needs of ordinary Palestinians).
