Holy Week Posters

When I was a child I remember seeing the majority of the houses around me having 'This is Holy Week' posters in their windows and realise that this was due to one of the local churchwardens sticking one through each and every letterbox!

First I have to, albeit belatedly, applaud the commitment of the warden for this was no mean task,

Secondly I have to wonder why the people put them in their windows, because we did and our family were anything but Christian in observance or attendance?

I've been looking around and find that as day two of Holy Week begins, I haven't seen a single poster.

For those of you who, as usual, are wondering what I'm on about, here's a version:

Now, was the placing of these peer pressure or something else?

Pax

I was just thinking the same thing myself. Our family were the only practicing Catholics in the road, but several houses would display the 'This is Holy Week' posters in their windows. I loved counting them on my way home from the bus stop. We need to revive this tradition.

They had a slip at the bottom that dropped down on Easter Sunday to announce He is Risen!

I have a holy week poster in my window I always display it every year, I call this week the week of weeks because Christ's death is crucial to the christian message..and while I have walked around as yet I have not seen a single poster in anybody's window is Jesus being forgotten ?

I wonder if we (the Church) are at fault because I have realised that although I printed some off, I didn't manage to get out and distribute them around the church as I would have wished.

Mental note for next year - one in every parish magazine :-)

Thanks for you comments,

A blesséd and productive Holy Week to you and yours

Hi All

Just a quick note to what I realise is now an old thread to say that the posters are very much still going! There's still time to get your order in for this year's Holy Week. They can be ordered directly from www.holyweekposters.co.uk.

Thanks Mark - I'll do a new blog entry to encourage people to get in touch,

Dear Rev Vic - on top of what Mark wrote above, I can clarify a few things. The posters are produced by a Catholic lay organisation called the Knights of Saint Columba; of whom I am a member but in Southend-on-Sea, Essex. Normally, the practice is for the local Knights in an area to provide the posters to mainly Catholic parishes and sometimes Anglican parishes like we do, and these are for parishioners to take home and display for Holy Week with the fold down section at the bottom for Easter Sunday and onwards - 'He is Risen!'. I don't know if there is a Knights Council in your area. Many years ago, some of our members locally used to give a poster to each shop in a main road to display and apparently all would oblige. This doesn't happen in my area any more as our active membership is not as high as it used to be and we are simply busier these days but we do hand the same posters out to parishioners in our parishes to take home and display. Hope that is of help. It is amazing what blogs one can come across when they are simply searching for Holy Week posters because I had forgotten the website to order. Thank you Reverend.

Glad to have been able to help Damian and thank you for the pointer to the Knights. Will have a look and see if they're local.

To suggest we drop down "He is Risen" on Easter Sunday is nonsense . Why would we do that ? I love and have displayed the posters for years but always the full poster the whole time . Jesus has been Risen for 2000+ years - it's not an annual event . Holy Week also ends on Easter Saturday so Easter Sunday is even part of Holy Week . Jesus is with us every minute of every day .

Oops...NOT even part of Holy Week .
