Sunday Worship - Handel's timeless Messiah

I awoke this morning with Handel's Messiah banging through my head and that of the 'Young Messiah' variant too! So often we miss what is before us and cling to the traditional as if it were the only way. Recalling an apology from a first version of 'Hymns Ancient and Modern' regarding the inclusion of the 'tunes' and 'doggerel that are, of course, the self same hymns we treasure as classics today - here's a portion of the 'Young Messiah' to bless both man and God. Couldn't shake this song out of my head this morning - so prayed for Bryn and Sally and thanked God for a love that sent Jesus, the Christ, to restore the relationship between me and Him.

As we as a church come together to praise God for the harvest I couldn't think of a better traditional hymn to be humming as I came down the stairs than this - been with me for as long as I can remember and even though the words meant little to a Cockney kid among the remains of houses, it has a special place with me.

This morning the Radio Four continuity man had me marvelling as he announced:

"The Archbishop of Canterbury will do the Sunday Worship in ten minutes!"

That must be why he's the Archbishop - takes me at least forty-five minutes to do our morning service!
