Ash Wednesday
Psalm 38
Rebuke me not, O Lord, in your anger, neither chasten me in your heavy displeasure. For your arrows have stuck fast in me and your hand presses hard upon me. There is no health in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no peace in my bones because of my sin. For my iniquities have gone over my head; their weight is a burden too heavy to bear.
My wounds stink and fester because of my foolishness. I am utterly bowed down and brought very low; I go about mourning all the day long. My loins are filled with searing pain; there is no health in my flesh. I am feeble and utterly crushed; I roar aloud because of the disquiet of my heart.
O Lord, you know all my desires and my sighing is not hidden from you. My heart is pounding, my strength has failed me; the light of my eyes is gone from me. My friends and companions stand apart from my affliction; my neighbours stand afar off. Those who seek after my life lay snares for me; and those who would harm me whisper evil and mutter slander all the day long.
But I am like one who is deaf and hears not, like one that is dumb, who does not open his mouth. I have become like one who does not hear and from whose mouth comes no retort. For in you, Lord, have I put my trust; you will answer me, O Lord my God. For I said, ‘Let them not triumph over me, those who exult over me when my foot slips.’
Truly, I am on the verge of falling and my pain is ever with me. I will confess my iniquity and be sorry for my sin. Those that are my enemies without any cause are mighty, and those who hate me wrongfully are many in number. Those who repay evil for good are against me, because the good is what I seek. Forsake me not, O Lord; be not far from me, O my God. Make haste to help me, O Lord of my salvation.

Then I turned to the Lord God, to seek an answer by prayer and supplication with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. I prayed to the Lord my God and made confession, saying,
‘Ah, Lord, great and awesome God, keeping covenant and steadfast love with those who love you and keep your commandments, we have sinned and done wrong, acted wickedly and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and ordinances. We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, and our ancestors, and to all the people of the land. Now therefore, O our God, listen to the prayer of your servant and to his supplication, and for your own sake, Lord, let your face shine upon your desolated sanctuary. Incline your ear, O my God, and hear. Open your eyes and look at our desolation and the city that bears your name. We do not present our supplication before you on the ground of our righteousness, but on the ground of your great mercies. O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, listen and act and do not delay! For your own sake, O my God, because your city and your people bear your name!’

Of course, there is great gain in godliness combined with contentment; for we brought nothing into the world, so that we can take nothing out of it; but if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these. But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.
But as for you, man of God, shun all this; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. In the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep the commandment without spot or blame until the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ, which he will bring about at the right time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords. It is he alone who has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see; to him be honour and eternal dominion. Amen.
As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.

Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing that you have made and forgive the sins of all those who are penitent: create and make in us new and contrite hearts that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may receive from you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Rebuke me not, O Lord, in your anger, neither chasten me in your heavy displeasure. For your arrows have stuck fast in me and your hand presses hard upon me. There is no health in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no peace in my bones because of my sin. For my iniquities have gone over my head; their weight is a burden too heavy to bear.
My wounds stink and fester because of my foolishness. I am utterly bowed down and brought very low; I go about mourning all the day long. My loins are filled with searing pain; there is no health in my flesh. I am feeble and utterly crushed; I roar aloud because of the disquiet of my heart.
O Lord, you know all my desires and my sighing is not hidden from you. My heart is pounding, my strength has failed me; the light of my eyes is gone from me. My friends and companions stand apart from my affliction; my neighbours stand afar off. Those who seek after my life lay snares for me; and those who would harm me whisper evil and mutter slander all the day long.
But I am like one who is deaf and hears not, like one that is dumb, who does not open his mouth. I have become like one who does not hear and from whose mouth comes no retort. But as for you, man of God, shun all this; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. Ash Wednesday 2016
So here we are at the beginning of another Lent and the challenges that lie before us are perhaps tempered by the failures that lies behind us or diminished by our triumphs. Each of us create a patchwork quilt of our lives - some of the patches bring joy, others tears and others still, regret.
Some will take us back to the times when we have blessed God and those around us, others will bring back the pain of failure and separation; from God, from those around us, from those special people in our lives.
Today as Lent's forty days call us to examine our lives, what will we find and who will we have become at the end of this road?
Will the cross be on our shoulders or in a ditch?
Lord, how can we stand in your presence?
Our sins lie behind us and the accuser stands before us.
People, clamour round to hear the words and add their scorn;
Where blessing should be found, there is but contempt.
Those who would call themselves Church become one with those who cried out; "Crucify HIm, crucify Him!"
The homeless are passed by (on the other side of the road);
The hungry go unfed (perhaps it wasn't our ministry);
The poor, will always be with us (and 'we' have so little, what can 'we' do?)
The 'straight' are crooked and the 'gay' are sad,
The woman up the road with four children - none of them have a Dad,
The man who cries out about what should be done - continues to do nothing!
Today - in the ashes of the same palm crosses waved in triumph - is found our failings.
Today - in the ruins of our lives thus far - is found the reminder that we too are dust.
Today - a day of hope, not sorrow - for there is one who speaks for us.
Today - as the path to the cross become clear - there is forgiveness.
Give us the strength to take up our cross
To lay down our sins
And truly follow Him
Who is, for us, the Christ.
Amen.

40ACTS: Starting Line
"I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please." Isaiah 46:10 (NIV)
From the very beginning the Lord had a plan for reconciliation and redemption. It didn’t happen by chance and it didn’t alter over time. The generosity of the cross was a plan. Generosity rarely just ‘happens’.
When it comes to our own generosity, having a plan – whatever we may feel about that – can allow generosity to spread further than we might ever imagine. Many people use a three-strand approach to guide their giving:
Church – at the centre.
Giving our time, money, prayer and skills to our churches and their programmes enables them to flourish.
Charity and charitable work – moves our focus to the world around us.
We are all shaped by experiences – both good and bad – and these can draw us to specific causes. Sometimes we simply feel a clear calling to a particular project or work. So whether you support evangelism, anti-trafficking, education or youth development, make a plan for supporting the area(s) you feel strongly about.
Impulsive generosity – planning for the unexpected.
I love this! Whether this is making space in your week to pray, serve or give, we can’t respond without a plan. You may wish to help a charity with a one-time need or make a donation to support a friend’s fundraising event. Sometimes we may even stumble upon an individual in need and choose to respond directly or anonymously.
Traditionally, Lent has been viewed as a season of giving up. A time to sacrifice. 40acts was envisioned to take that one step further. Just as Jesus surrendered his life to atone for our sin, we give up in order to put others first. But in order to bless others, we must plan ahead. So, whether you have 5, 10 or 60 spare minutes, start now.
Whether you’re new to 40acts or have been following the campaign for five years, welcome!
Whether you are following as an individual, family, church or group of friends, we hope you find the next 40 days inspiring, challenging and motivating. Perhaps you’ll hit a lull at 20 days. Perhaps you’ll breeze through 40! Perhaps on Day 41 you’ll revise your generosity plan for the coming year.
But above all else, at the end of 40 days I pray you will have drawn closer to Jesus, one act at a time.

Ash Wednesday
Rushed into the local shop last night where I was asked what was going on 'over at the church'.
When I replied that it was Ash Wednesday they looked blankly at me until suddenly one of them smiled and said, "Oh yeah, the stop smoking thing!"
Would have fared much better had I told them it was 'Orange Wednesday' I fear!'
Still, you've got to laugh, haven't you?

I love the smell of ashes in the morning!
So once again Lent is with us as last night saw four of us priests coming together to do the Parish Ash Wednesday service and a jolly good service it was too as we marked the beginning of our Lenten journey.
I love the service and relish the task of preparing the liturgy and getting the ash sorted, especially the ash. The ash is created by burning palm crosses and adding a little oil. It brings the reality that the same things that were waved in praise of Christ with loud Hosannas, turned to dust are a great reflection of the 'then' and our own condition now.
The oil, symbolic of the Holy Spirit, brings the Spirit and the ashes together, a mirror of the origins of life and a promise of the resurrection to come.it also means that it is not just a symbol of our repentance, but an anointing for the journey ahead, enabling us to take up our cross and begin our Lentern journey in God's power and enabling.
Of course the oil also helps the ash to adhere as well so spiritual and practical combine - which can't be bad, can it?
For me, Ash Wednesday is the only time a Priest uses the word 'us' rather than 'you' at the absolution (a pet niggle this). On Ash Wednesday we all come and acknowledge our failings, we all are ashed and we come before God as a fallen and flawed people. None are exempt, for all have fallen short of the glory of God.
For me, Lent is about taking up rather than giving up. So many people parade their putting aside chocolate and if I had a pound for every time I have been asked, "What are you giving up?" I'd be rich! It's about self-examination and so we give up things that provide us with more time and less distractions from the task in hand, not for the sake of giving up.
Happy Lent, may our journeying be profitable and draw us closer to God and the image of Christ in us.

The oil, symbolic of the Holy Spirit, brings the Spirit and the ashes together, a mirror of the origins of life and a promise of the resurrection to come.it also means that it is not just a symbol of our repentance, but an anointing for the journey ahead, enabling us to take up our cross and begin our Lentern journey in God's power and enabling.
Of course the oil also helps the ash to adhere as well so spiritual and practical combine - which can't be bad, can it?
For me, Ash Wednesday is the only time a Priest uses the word 'us' rather than 'you' at the absolution (a pet niggle this). On Ash Wednesday we all come and acknowledge our failings, we all are ashed and we come before God as a fallen and flawed people. None are exempt, for all have fallen short of the glory of God.
For me, Lent is about taking up rather than giving up. So many people parade their putting aside chocolate and if I had a pound for every time I have been asked, "What are you giving up?" I'd be rich! It's about self-examination and so we give up things that provide us with more time and less distractions from the task in hand, not for the sake of giving up.
