some thirty years ago, Prince Charles gave the world a new architectural term to the common parlance as he criticised an extension to the National Gallery by referring to it as a "monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much-loved and elegant friend". The point of the comment was that the creation stood out like a sore thumb. Today, this label is applied to those wonderfully 'out of character' or perhaps 'blinking awful abominations' that abound today.
