A love that speaks of sacrifice

A love that speaks of sacrifice
Comforting words at Easter as we speak of Jesus the Christ
Stirring words as He stands before the Sanhedrin
Intellectually challenging words as He stands before Pilate (twice)
Mocking words as He stands before Herod
Bloody awful words as the scourge bites and the nails pierce
Triumphal words as the tomb is found empty

Words that ring true as the phone rings at three in the morning
As someone across the square makes a beeline for you
Or the person who once stood shoulder to shoulder with you
(Or should have)
Denies and dismisses you before all who will listen
Challenges you to take up your cross too

And the pain
The barb that tears?

The believer who,
glibly,
easily,
carelessly says:

'I could never
 I would never
 I don't want to - It's not my calling'

The cruellest barb of all
