Heroes and Zeroes - World Cup 2014

Well it's done and dusted and sports fans will have to content themselves with the Tour or the Test matches as Brazil's World Cup comes to an end and we start to look towards the new Premier league season which will be upon us before we know it.

But before we leave Brazil completely I thought I'd have a look at the heroes and zeroes of the campaign and ponder what they show us.

The Heroes
Using the Opta stats this is THE team of the 2014 World Cup:

and this is the MOTD Pundit's choice:

For me the star of the games was a Goalkeeper: Tim Howard (United States)
Played just four games but was the busiest goalkeeper in the tournament - leading the group stages with 27 saves. Against Belgium he was immense (13 diving saves from 15 saves made). He was solid and kept his fiercely dedicated and engaged side (everything England perhaps weren't)  in the game at times and was in no small measure the reason America advanced into the knockout stages!

The Zeroes
Using the stats again:

Well at least we have some England players on the pitch! But I was a little surprised at the vitriol behind some of the comments regarding our offering in this category:

Leighton Baines (Left Back)
England can manage without Ashley Cole! It was the en vogue refrain from the minute that manager Roy Hodgson picked his provisional squad. The future of the Three Lions' left side was in safe hands thanks to the moptopped Toffee and young Luke Shaw, Man United's apparent new signing. The refrain appears to have been little more than a diversionary mantra, a chant born of delusion rather than truth. Baines was toasted by the canny movements of Matteo Darmian and Antonio Candreva versus Italy; it didn't help that he was frequently left to defend two-on-one, but the manner in which he bought Candreva's dummy before the cross that Mario Balotelli scored for the game winner suggested that he was a callow teen, not the stalwart who has locked down Everton's flank since 2007. It wasn't much better against Uruguay.

Glen Johnson (Right Back)
Liverpool fans have been frustrated for ages about their longtime right-back's inability to man-mark or defend properly, but now their pain is shared by the nation after three subpar performances amid England's limp World Cup presence. He did tee up Wayne Rooney for his first goal at FIFA's big event, but it wasn't enough. Johnson looked outmatched no matter which opponent was running at him.

Steven Gerrard (Defensive Midfielder)
Although he was praised for his mature adaptation into a deep-lying, restrained playmaker for Liverpool, Gerrard's attempt to reprise this role for England looked more headless chicken than fearless leader. He spent much of the World Cup chasing shadows or being overrun. His role in Luis Suarez's second goal, an unwittingly perfect flick-on for his club teammate's well-timed run, added further bitterness to a difficult campaign -- and surely his last in an England shirt.

So there we have it - I'm have to be honest and admit that I'm quite pleasantly surprised as I was expecting more England players in the Flops XI.

So, as one ever hopeful England fan has it, we can look forward to Euro 16 and a victorious England campaign now. Good to have faith innit :-)

ps. Am I the only one to have been thoroughly depressed and the amount of diving that happened throughout the competition?

My award for diver of the games has to be Arjen Robben, a man who makes Drogba look amateur and should be heading for hollywood (or the Olympic diving pool) when his career ends. The sadness is that he a great player who has no need of cheating and this makes his actions all the more distasteful :-(

England Football - Some World Cup Trivia

England managed to look after their players by bringing them home as quickly as possible to avoid injuries that might affect their day job and as they enjoy a long World Cup run in front of their televisions, here's a few bits of World Cup trivia for you to amaze your friends with (also handy for that moment when you want to drop something into the sermon to look knowledgeable about football).

Hopefully this will provide the doom and gloom merchants with something to keep them happily moaning.

Have I mentioned I'm Dutch (once England go out that is!)?

World Cup goes Hollywood - made me smile

There are some extremely clever people out there and just as some stand and fight whilst others turn to flight or bite this makes for a timely smile-inducing image:

Caption Contest - World Cup!

Well here we are - it's World Cup fever and as some of the footballing fraternity sit back to count the money they've made from backhanders and other's conspire to make the Mafia look like a mutual and friendly society the rest of the world are reflecting on the game and wondering who will win the prizes for best dive, worst foul, dodgiest referee, flukiest goal and most pints drunk (fans contest running on a per game and throughout the whole competition basis). So here's the start of a World Cup caption contest and an opportunity to nominate players (and fans) for the above categories.

And here's a couple of images to whet the whistle:

Tamworth's Street Angels hoping for new members in time for the World Cup
Tamworth's Street Angels are hoping a host of heavenly helpers will join them when they take on extra shifts during the World Cup.The Street Angels have been lending a helping hand on the streets of Tamworth since November and have proved a resounding success. Teams of Street Angels take turns to patrol the town’s streets between 10.30pm and 2.30am every Friday night – and now plan to also work on Saturdays. Each team has a trained First Responder with appropriate kit and a Townsafe radio linked to the Townsafe network and the other groups on the night patrols. They carry special foil hoodies for revellers who are suffering from cold as well as flip-flops to replace lost shoes or high heels, water, tissues, wet wipes, plasters, rubber gloves and any other items required to clean up vomit or enable first-aid

Leyfield’s vicar Vic Van  Den Bergh is behind the Tamworth scheme. He said: “Tamworth Street Angels have been working on the streets of Tamworth for six months helping people in a variety of ways and now it's time for them to step up a gear as summer and the World Cup draw ever nearer.
"Over the past six months they have been joined by various observers to see what really happens, one of them being former mayor Lee Bates. All have been most impressed by the commitment and energy of the teams. There is an opportunity for those who think they might like to be a Street Angel to come out with them to see first hand what it takes to be part of the team.
"Those who decide to join will find themselves receiving first aid and other training that will not only help them to support the people of Tamworth but will make them that little bit more confident when faced with challenges and decisions.
"Joining is free and the benefits from meeting the people on a Friday night are immeasurable."
Why not be an angel and consider joining them? A recruitment evening for anyone wishing to join the Street Angels is being held tonight (Thursday June 12) at 7.30pm at St Francis Church in Masefield Drive, Leyfields.
