Terry Affair - A Minister Speaks

The Health Minister Mike O'Brien has, realising that this issue sits fairly within his portfolio (thought it was NHS IT!), spoken out against the sacking of John Terry as England Captain. This could of course explain why the NHS is in such turmoil, he obviously thinks he's a Sports Minister!

Mr O'Brien says, "The sacking of Terry is crass. Capello has bowed to tabloid pressure. Infidelity is bad but I saw no signs of fatigue in his football." This isn't about his standard of play on the field but his conduct in playing off the field! I am saddened and more than a little appalled when a government minister display the ends justify anything you fancy approach to life. Then again he's a politician and truth for them, like integrity, openness and honesty, can be a changing constant. Sad, because I assumed that having been one of the few to have no problems over the expenses scandal he'd be supporting this as a right decision as he appears to be a consistently good bloke (just sad he's in a failing government).

What happens on the pitch cannot be the only standard we apply to our footballers (or any other hero, sporting or otherwise) for if this is the case then we are creating a superclass who are above moral codes and societal standards. The message being sent out here is that anything, regardless of how morally wrong it is, is acceptable as long as it doesn't interfere with the person's performance in his chosen field.

I have to be honest and say that this probably highlights the problems with Westminster in a nutshell!
